The strike action embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of
Universities, Imo State University chapter has been called off after
the lecturers received alerts of payments of their April and May
salaries.
The ASUU executives who spoke to us on condition of anonymity, said
the state government is still left with bulk of arrears to settle
which forms part of the agreement reached with them to call off the
strike.
He disclosed that despite the promise by the governor to pay part of
the huge arrears, adding that part of the agreement was to sponsor
lecturers in seminars, summits which he said was a pre-requisite for
school accreditations by the National University Commission (NUC)

Meanwhile, the governor has paid April and May 2016 salaries of ASUU
and has promised to pay others soon.
According to imsuvila, a government source also said the governor in
his magnanimity and love for students and education decided to allow
the sleeping dog lie.
On the other hand, according to the source, the lecturers are expected
to go back to their classrooms and resume to avoid crash of programmes
in the university.
On the issue of the visit of NUC committee which is expected to visit
the school for further accreditation, the source from ASUU said, "the
governor must pay the arrears to a certain percentage and fulfill the
MoU signed by both parties to enable the NUC visit have impact."
