IMSU strike: l’ll concession (give up on) Imo state university if ... –Okorocha

On the event of the lingered strike action embarked upon by Academic
Staff Union of University (ASUU), Imo State University (IMSU) chapter,
Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha has threatened to concession (give up on)
the university if ASUU refuse to call off their strike.

Governor Okorocha who stated this while briefing Newsmen over the
weekend described the action of ASUU as a deliberate attempt to
sabotage his continued effort to sustain free education programme in
the state which according to him is one of the best achievements of
his administration and the best to happen to Imo people since the
creation of the state in 1976.

"ASUU have been fighting me over free education. I tell you the cheap
blackmailers of free education in Imo state is ASUU of Imo State
University. They don't like the idea of children not paying school
fees and I don't know what they benefit from it.

"In the meeting I had with them before the strike, they asked me to
stop free education and I asked them what has children not paying
school fees got to do with your salaries? They said they are going on
strike unless I pay them balance of Six Hundred Million Naira because
I have paid them Six Hundred Million remaining Six Hundred Million of
the money owe them by Ohakim administration eight years ago.

He however appealed to the entire Imolites including the IMSU students
to join him in persuading the ASUU to stop the strike action and
return to class activities for the interest of all particularly the
students cum education development in the state

According to him, no amount of pressure or discouragement can make him
terminate the on-going free education for all Imo children and vowed
to make every necessary sacrifices and efforts that will ensure that
the programme is sustained beyond his administration.

"So I want you people to beg them to go back to school because I have
no choice but to concession ( give up on) the university now and then
bring in new lecturers who are ready to work. And I will do it.

"So I want to appeal to ASUU to call off the strike because they have
no reason not to go back to school because of one month salary. They
should stop punishing the innocent children because Rochas will never
leave free education because of ASUU pressure." Imo governor noted.
