Illegal abattoir operators attacked officials of the Lagos task force
– The butchers were not conforming with the statutory standards as
contained in the Lagos state environmental sanitation laws
– Members of the task force who sustained injuries are undergoing treatment
Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special
Offences Unit (Task Force) were attacked and machete with cutlasses
and broken bottles by miscreants and illegal abattoir operators at
Idi-Araba, Lawanson in Lagos on Saturday, May 7.
The miscreants and the illegal abattoir operators also seriously
damaged two Toyota Hilux vans and a Black Maria belonging to the
agency.


Supol Wilson Alaba and a driver Mr. Adekunle Victor were among
security back-up provided by the Agency to accompanied Lagos State
Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives during the clamped down on
illegal abattoirs/Slabs at Oshodi and Idi-Araba respectively.
The illegal abattoirs and slabs operators were being clamped down
because they were not in line with the statutory standards as
contained in the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Laws.
Members had hinted the government about this illegal abattoir and
slabs around Oshodi and Idi-Araba.
The enforcement team that had successfully sealed an illegal abattoir
at Oshodi met a stiff resistance from miscreants and operators of
illegal abattoir and slabs at Idi-Araba.
The rampaging miscreants came out in large numbers and started
throwing weapons like cutlasses, knives, stones and broken bottles
from different directions.
To avoid loss of lives and properties, it was gathered that the
taskforce officials tactically withdrew from the scene.
During the fracas, Alaba was seriously macheted with cutlass on his
left hand and while Victor who was abducted and later rescued in a
pool of blood had his head and left leg broken with weapons.
Taskforce spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo said Victor is presently
receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the Lagos State Teaching
Hospital in Ojota where he is recuperating.
