The accommodation problem of students of Imo State University at Lake
Nwaebere Owerri and the plight of parents who spend through their nose
to provide or procure residential spaces around the university at
exurbanite rates for them, will soon be a thing of the past, as the
present acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Mrs. Victoria
Adaobi Obasi is not leaving any stone unturned in her current effort
to ensure that her students are properly accommodated in a safe and
serene environment necessary for academic works and learning at an
affordable rents.

Investigations at the university campus revealed that Prof. Obasi has
been making frantic efforts on the contractors handling the
construction of the multi million naira multiple hostel complex at the
campus to complete the project for subsequent use in the next academic
year beginning September, 2016.

Further investigation revealed that the new Vice Chancellor is worried
over the plight of the students and their parents as well as constant
reported cases of cult activities.

Meanwhile students who reside in some private hostels and private
properties in Orji, Uratta, Amakohia and Akwakuma areas, pay as much
as N90, 000 to N100, 000 a room per annum and in order to meet
economic challenges they are forced to live four in a room with some
squatting another set of four students to minimize cost.

The off campus or rather non-residential status of the state
university has been a source of concern not only to parents alone but
also other inhabitants of the axis who are exposed to various types of
crime including armed robbery, cult, rituals and prostitution.
