Unstable situation Looms In IMSU, Imo Poly As Gov. Okorocha abolishes free education in Imo
state.
The fee, dubbed “ancillary fees”, was said to have been
introduced by the institution’s management following directive from the state
governor, Owelle Rochas Anayo Ethelbert Okorocha for the students of the
university to commence payment of fees.

It would be recalled
that Okorocha had, during the commissioning ceremony of a recreation park popularly
known as “IMSU love garden” at the university campus, Owerri in late 2014,
declared absolute free Education to indigenes and non indigenes of the state
studying in Imo State University and Imo State Polytechnic.
The governor also abolished all charges made on the students
by the authorities of the institutions and further called on the university and
polytechnic authorities to stop forthwith the collection of N50,000 acceptance
fee made on new intakes(freshers).
Information available
to imsuvila, has it that Governor Okorocha re-introduced payment of tuition
fees especially for non-indigenes because other governors in Nigeria refused to
grant free education to non indigenes in their states.

Imsuvila learnt those of the Imo State polytechnic were
compelled to present receipts of payments of the fees before they were allowed
to write the just concluded exams.
It is worthy of note that the fees were categorized, between
indigenous and non-indigenous students.
Some of the students in imo state university stated that the
re- introduction of tuition fees was meant to create crisis in their various
families as Governor Okorocha had at different fora, boasted that he had given
free education up to university level.
