Imo Lawmakers turn to admission officers for tertiary institutions

JAMB logo
As part of their constituency projects for their respective areas,
some legislators in the Imo State House of Assembly have taken the
contract job of seeking for and processing admission for candidates
from their constituencies into the state owned and other tertiary
institutions contrary to the new JAMB regulations on admission into
such institutions.

As some of this state institution began Post JAMB screening exercise
last weeks, two of the legislator from Onuimo and Ohaji Egbema have
posted advertorial on the social media calling on prospective
candidates from their constituencies to supply all relevant materials
required for the admission to their offices for further action.

In his on wall, Hon. Chinedu Offor, the former Commissioner for
Information and Strategy now legislator representing Onuimo stated as
follows "to all Onuimo students, please submit your names for
2016/2017 tertiary admission for the following schools, Imo State
University (IMSU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO),
Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Imo
State Polytechnic respectively.

The advertorial further directed as follows, "you must score up to 180
in JAMB and must have filled the institutions online form for
screening. Please note that the filling of Imo State University (IMSU)
ends on Friday, 19th August 2016, endeavour to send your name with the
JAMB Slip (Duplicate) to my office at Imo State House of Assembly
Complex (IMHA) Owerri for compilation. Note! This information for
admission is strictly for Onuimo students, God bless".

In a similar comparative and competitive gesture the legislator for
Ohaji/Egbema, Hon. Chigozie E. Orie in his own message stated thus,
"you are directed to submit names of candidates for 2016/2017 tertiary
institutions admission for the following schools, Imo State University
(IMSU), Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Alvan Ikoku Collegage
of Education, Federal Polytechnic Nekede and Imo State Polytechnic
Umuagwo, respectively".

It equally stipulated further that "the candidates must score up to
180 in JAMB and must have filled the institution online form for
screening and please note that the online filling of the form for Imo
State University (IMSU) ends on Friday, this week, 19th August, 2016.
Endeavour to send your candidates names with JAMB slip duplicate to my
office at Imo State House of Assembly Complex, Owerri for compilation
from tomorrow to Friday.

From the above advertorial, it is evident that the legislators have in
their capacity as lawmakers assumed the function of providing
admission for their constituents thereby usurping the jobs of the
admission of the university authorities and those of the candidates
who should appear for the screening exercise.

In the light of the above scenario, one begins to wonder what will be
the fate of the children of non-indigenes resident in our state and
children of persons on the other side of the political divide-apathy
and the performance of these students who have been assured of
admission even if they don't meet the cut-off for such admission.
